Devil's Potrero

MAP     Satellite

Just outside the eastern boundary of the Sespe Condor Sanctuary, the Devil's Potrero and the adjacent Pothole comprise a major meadow in the highlands of the County.  Ringed by chaparral-covered slopes, the basin opens northward with a sill at about 700 meters (2,300 feet).  Chaparral here consists of mountain mahogany, Cercocarpus betuloides, chamise, Adenostoma fasciculatum, scrub oak, Quercus sp., and California sagebrush, Artemisia californica.

During the  spring, the meadow frequently has a fine wildflower display. In the Pothole is a freshwater marsh with Scirpus sp., Typha sp., etc. The animal fauna is representative and abundant. Frequently the rare California condor, Gymnogyps californianus, is seen flying over the area.

Integrity: There are trails and campgrounds in the lower section of the area, but it is relatively undisturbed.

Use:  Research, educational, observational, light recreation.
