Indian Knob

MAP     Satellite

Indian Knob lies to the east of the highway south of San Luis Obispo. A small part of the knob is forested with oaks, primarily Quercus agrifolia, but the main community is chaparral. The area is the type locality of the rare Eriodictyon altissimum, which is known from only this region.

The knob is of Upper Miocene sedimentary rock. Some tar sands are found in the area.

Integrity: There has been drilling for the tar and housing is encroaching on the area; however, the vegetation is in good condition.

Use: Private
