Garcia Mountain Watershed Numerous plant communities occur in the Garcia Mountain watershed, which forms the headwaters of the Salinas, flowing to the north, and of the Huasna River and Arroyo Grande Creek flowing to the south or west. Much of the area is in chaparral, with Yucca sp., Adenostoma fasciculatum and probably Adenostoma sparsifolium, or a pine forest with Coulter and gray pine, Pinus coulteri and Pinus sabiniana. Along the rivers and creeks there are riparian associations with sycamores, Platanus racemosa, common. There is some grassland and mixed evergreen forest, with Quercus spp. dominating in the latter. Several species appear to be at or near their range limits here. These include, from the north, Gilia tenuiflora, Perideridia californica and Lupinus pachylobus; from the south, Lotus hamatus, Lupinus sparsiflorus, Ericameria cuneata and Monardella lanceolata. The rare Lupinus ludovicianus occurs here. Animal life is abundant. Integrity: Portions have been grazed but much of the area is virtually undisturbed. Use: Research, educational, observational; some private. January 1978 San Luis ObispoInventory of California Natural Areas Revision © 2005 Steven Louis Hartman
