Harding Canyon

MAP     Satellite

Harding Canyon has relatively steep sides covered with chaparral, the dominant being chamise, Adenostoma fasciculatum.  Along the canyon floor is an intermittent stream which supports a riparian community including sycamore, Platanus racemosa, and white alder, Alnus rhombifolia.  There are excellent stands of coast live oak, Quercus agrifolia, by the stream bed.

Animal life, typical of the Santa Ana Mountains, is abundant. The area supports a rather large population of the California newt, Taricha torosa.

Much of the canyon is underlain by Jurassic marine slates and other sedimentaries, though there are extrusions of the upper Jurassic Santiago Peak volcanics which include dark-colored flows, primarily andesitic, tuffs and breccia.

Integrity:  Relatively undisturbed in much of the area; however, it is a popular area for hiking.

Use:  Private
