Natural Areas

El Modeno Hills

MAP     Satellite

This area contains one of the best examples of hybridization in cacti along the Southern California coast, involving Opuntia acanthocarpa, Opuntia parryi, non-native Opuntia ficus-indica, and Opuntia littoralis.

Numerous other perennials here include chamise, Adenostoma fasciculatum, California sagebrush, Artemisia californica, lemonade berry, Rhus integrifolia, laurel sumac, Malosma laurina, white sage, Salvia apiana, black sage, Salvia mellifera, Encelia californica, California buckwheat, Eriogonum fasciculatum, and Yucca whipplei.

As a biotic habitat, the area provides a refuge for the typical Southern California chaparral fauna. The relatively uncommon ringtailed cat, Bassariscus astutus, is present.

The substrate is derived from sandstone, and many large outcrops are found on the site.

Integrity:  There is no present development, but urbanization of the surrounding area can pose a threat.

Use:  Should be preserved as biotic refugia, for research and education.
