San Antonio Wash

MAP     Satellite

This area is typical of the once common vegetation in the washes of the Los Angeles basin.

Most of the vegetation in this area, which lies downstream from the San Antonio Dam, is coastal sage scrub with coffeeberry, Rhamnus californica, scrub oak, Quercus berberidifolia, Rhus spp., and Yucca whipplei ssp. parishii, the latter forming spectacular displays during the blooming season.  The scrub on the sandy alluvial soils is more open than is normally encountered.  Baccharis sp. is found near the watercourses.

This area, as Big Tujunga, only to a lesser extent, has elements of the desert flora, including Chrysothamnus sp. and a number of annuals.

Integrity:  The creek has been channelled and there is a levee surrounding a portion of the area.  There are some dirt roads in the area; however, it remains a fair sample of the wash vegetation.

Use:  Research, educational, observational.  Some private.
