Fort Tejon State Historical Park and Vicinity Although primarily an historical area, the park supports one of the southernmost stands of the blue oak woodland community. In addition to the blue oak, Quercus douglasii, the valley oak, Quercus lobata, is present as is the California buckeye, Aesculus californica, gray pine, Pinus sabiniana, and elderberry, Sambucus mexicana. The blue oak, pine and buckeye are near the southern limits of their ranges here. In sections of the park, valley grassland and chaparral are present. In the latter are found such species as Mormon tea, Ephedra californica, and Yucca whipplei. Along Grapevine Creek there is a riparian community with cottonwood, Populus fremontii, willow, Salix sp., and cattail, Typha sp. Integrity: The park is managed for its historical value but the vegetation on the slopes is relatively undisturbed. Use: Present May 1977 Kern |
