Little Panoche Wildlife Area

>Map     >Satellite

A small dam on the Little Panoche Creek has created a permanent pond which is the main feature of this Wildlife Area. In this otherwise generally arid region the water serves as a focal point for numerous animals. During migratory season a number of waterfowl rest and feed in the area. California quail, Lophortyx californicus, and the introduced chukar, Alectoris graeca, are the primary game birds here.

The pond is bordered in portions by a marsh, with tule, Scirpus sp., the dominant. Upstream along the creek course there is a riparian community with willow, Salix sp., and cottonwood, Populus fremontii.

The uplands consist of grassland including scattered shrubs, primarily Atriplex sp.

Integrity: The area is managed for hunting. There is a dam, and the area is partially fenced. Several dirt roads cross the area.

Use: Research, educational, observational, present.
