>Map >Satellite Though not a natural area, the Institute is an important research center and was the first Forest Service facility devoted solely to forest genetics studies. In the Eddy Arboretum there are some 70 pine and 30 fir species from throughout the northern hemisphere (there are approximately 80 species of Pinus and 40 of Abies). There is a stand of ponderosa pines, Pinus ponderosa, with specimens from about 50 distinct geographic areas throughout western North America. Integrity: This is an arboretum and experimental forest and was established in 1925. There are numerous buildings, roads and other facilities. Use: Research, educational, observational. May 1977
