Anderson Island Natural Preserve

>Map     >Satellite

Anderson Island is located in the north arm of Folsom Lake in the State Recreation Area. During low-water periods it is connected to the mainland.

Vegetation consists of an oak woodland with blue oak, Quercus douglasii, the dominant species, mixed with some interior live oak, Quercus wislizenii, and a score or so of gray pine, Pinus sabiniana. The understory is a grassland, primarily exotics, including some chaparral species such as Ceanothus sp. and Arctostaphylos sp.

In the pines there is a great blue heron, Ardea herodias, rookery.

Integrity: Though grazed in the past, the island has been virtually undisturbed since the filling of the dam some 30-plus years ago.

Use: Research, educational, observational.
